In my opinion, one of the coolest things about studying history is connecting "material evidence" with "textual evidence." Adin Ballou and the Hopedale Community provide me with lots of examples. :-) Here's one: "In the early days of the Hopedale Community, the founder, in concurrence with his wife, whose judgment and wishes he was accustomed to consult on all matters of common interest, had selected in the public cemetery a family burial lot. It had, however, been for some time the desire of both Mr. and Mrs. Ballou to have erected in the center of the lot a more substantial and imposing monument, representing the unity of the family. It consists of a neat, pyramidal shaft, eighteen inches square at its lower extremity and fourteen feet high, having a base of suitable proportions, with appropriate plinth and die, resting on a massive pedestal, the whole being supported by a solid substructure, making it substantial, firm, and sure." ~Autobiography of Adin Ballou 1803-1890. |
