William F. Northrop William F. Northrop, 91, of Hopedale died Monday, Nov. 26, 2012 in Countryside Healthcare of Milford. He was the husband for 66 years of Helen B. (Duggan) Northrop. Bill was born April 30, 1921 in Milford, a son of the late William F. Northrop, Sr. and Florence S. (Scott) Northrop. He resided in Hopedale for most of his life and attended Hopedale schools and graduated from Tabor Academy and Nichols College. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during WWII; where he was stationed in Europe for 4 years. After returning from his military service, he continued in the tradition and interest in loom building as had his father, William, Sr., his grandfather Jonas and great uncle James Northrop, who invented the first automated loom; they had all worked for the former Draper Corp. When Draper Corp. closed, Bill partnered with other former Draper employees and formed DREX Co. in Hopkinton, retiring in 1990. Bill enjoyed boating, waterskiing and just being near the water. As a teenager, he built a kayak which he could and did, paddle in Hopedale Pond. He continued his love of building throughout his lifetime. His sons, Toby and Dick, helped him build a home on Cape Cod, which the family continues to enjoy. Bill also enjoyed traveling with his wife and took many trips in this country, where he drove his beloved Buick, and outside the continental U.S.A. In addition to his wife Helen, he is survived by two sons, William F. Toby Northrop III and his wife Carol of Ponte Vedra, FL and Richard D. Northrop and his wife Ronnie of Marblehead; a daughter Pamela Northrop of Hopedale; 3 grandchildren, Shawn Northrop of Portland, OR, Jennifer Northrop of Marblehead and David Guiliano and his wife Heidi of Sherborn; 2 great-grandchildren, Hayden Guiliano and Benjamin Guiliano; a sister Mary Newell of Greenville, SC and many nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held Saturday, December 1, 2012 at 11 AM in the Buma-Sargeant Funeral Home, 42 Congress St., Milford. Burial will be at a later date in Hopedale Village Cemetery, Hopedale. She attended Milford schools, graduated from Wheaton College, and took many advanced educational courses at surrounding colleges and taught for many years as a reading specialist, teacher, and school principal. Helen enjoyed traveling and took many trips with her daughter and husband over the years. She volunteered her time at Harvard's Fogg Museum, as well as, 25 years serving as an administration secretary for the Brigham & Women's Auxiliary Board in Boston, and many years at Milford Regional Med. Ctr. Auxiliary. Helen was the daughter of the late Joseph and Helen (Brown) Duggan and was the wife of the late William F. Northrop Jr. She is survived by two sons William F. "Toby" Northrop III and his wife Carol of Ponte Verde, FL and Richard D. and his wife Ronnie Northrop of Marblehead; one daughter, Pamela Northrop of Hopedale; 3 grandchildren Shawn Northrop of Portland, OR, Jennifer Northrop of Marblehead, and David and his wife Heidi Guiliano of Sherborn; and 2 great-grandchildren Hayden and Benjamin. A memorial service will be held Sat. Jan. 17, 2015 at 11 AM in the Hopedale Unitarian Parish, 65 Hopedale Street, Hopedale.
